2014 Apr 7

Freshman Sandra Shaw is an amateur figure skater and participates in national competitions for synchronized skating. She spends hours training with a team and recently competed at the 2014 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Colorado. Sandra's team placed within the top 10.

Sandra began skating when she was six years old at the recommendation of a friend and eventually took private lessons. She currently trains in the Starlights Synchronized Skating program as a member of a junior team, which is composed of sixteen skaters. Sandra practices three times a week with her teammates at the Twin Rinks Ice Pavilion in Buffalo Grove.

When asked why she chose to participate in synchronized skating, she says that she likes "being on a team because it means meeting and working with a variety of people." She is especially enthusiastic about having new experiences. Of the skating championship in Colorado, she states that "it was really exciting to know that you were competing against some of the best skaters in the country."

This was Sandra's fourth time competing at the national level. She hopes to continue skating throughout her high school career and will be looking into collegiate skating programs.
