Elijah Kuli participates in fifth annual "Civic Action" trip

2015 Jan 26

On January 15th, LFA students and faculty traveled to downtown Chicago to participate in Northwestern University's fifth annual "CivicAction" trip.

The trip is the result of a partnership between Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development and Lake Forest Academy. The Civic Education Project is an award-winning leadership and civic engagement program that is based on introducing students to human rights and urban affairs in Chicago.

Elijah spent the weekend in the West Englewood and the Back of the Yards neighborhoods engaged in service and attended seminars about housing, food security, and universal human rights, where they heard firsthand accounts about growing up homeless on the streets. The group also took time to reflect on these talks and discussed ways to improve the living conditions of certain urban areas.

Sarah Collins, the Director of Service Learning, describes the trip as an eye-opening experience. "The students saw first hand how their actions affect others in their own community and beyond. They have come back motivated to continue the conversation on human rights and social justice at LFA. Some of the student leaders will spread awareness and find support for the programs they helped serve."
